Dr. K T Varughese
Dr. K.T. Varughese (Konnanilkunnathil Thomas Varughese) is a distinguished Registered Indian Patent Agent (Reg. No. IN/PA-4269) and an accomplished leader in the fields of intellectual property rights, polymer science, and rubber technology. With over four decades of experience, he has made significant contributions to scientific research, innovation, and mentorship, leaving an indelible mark on the academic and industrial landscape.
Born on May 26, 1960, in Thelliyoor, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, Dr. Varughese began his academic journey with a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Kerala University in 1980. He further pursued his M.Sc. in Chemistry from Agra University in 1982 and earned his Ph.D. in Science from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in 1990. Committed to expanding his knowledge, he later acquired a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights Law (PGDIPRL) from the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, in 2007. In 2022, he demonstrated his expertise in intellectual property by qualifying as a Registered Patent Agent.
Dr. Varughese’s professional career is marked by his extensive research in polymer science and rubber technology. He served as a Junior Research Fellow at the Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, Cochin University, from 1984 to 1986, followed by a role as a Senior Research Fellow at the Rubber Technology Centre, IIT Kharagpur, from 1986 to 1989. His doctoral research at the Chemical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to scientific advancement.
In 1989, he joined the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bengaluru, where he held numerous prestigious positions over three decades. Rising through the ranks from Scientific Officer to Additional Director and Group Head, he demonstrated exceptional leadership in managing research programs, fostering innovation, and promoting knowledge dissemination. His administrative acumen was evident during his tenure as Joint Director of the R&D Management Division, Additional Director of the Training Division, and Head of the Information & Publicity Division. In these roles, he played a pivotal role in steering CPRI’s scientific endeavors to new heights.
As a dedicated mentor, Dr. Varughese served as a Recognized Research Guide at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, from 1993 to 2020. Under his guidance, eight scholars successfully completed their Ph.D. programs. Additionally, he collaborated with esteemed institutions like the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Bangalore University, Mysore University, and the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, contributing to the academic growth of numerous students. His involvement in examining and chairing Ph.D. dissertations further solidified his reputation as an academic leader.
A hallmark of his career was the successful organization of the International Conference on Polymers in Power Engineering (ICPMPE-2007), which brought together global experts and facilitated international knowledge exchange. His commitment to excellence in event management showcased his dedication to fostering collaboration and pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery.

His exceptional contributions continue to inspire the scientific community, making him a prominent figure in the fields of polymer science, rubber technology, and intellectual property management.
